CrossFit WOD Timer
A WOD — the workout of the day — is usually a short list of functional fitness exercises repeated for rounds and reps under a clock. The clock is what gives the workout its shape: it decides whether you are chasing rounds inside a time cap, starting a new set of reps every minute, or pushing to finish the work as fast as you can. A WOD timer keeps that structure for you, with clear work and rest periods and an audio cue at every transition, so your attention stays on the movements and your conditioning rather than on counting seconds.
Load one of the two examples below to see how the timer handles a typical CrossFit workout, then adjust the work time, rest time and rounds to match your own WOD.
Example WOD
10-minute AMRAP
10 Air Squats
10 Push-Ups
10 Sit-Ups
Example EMOM
Every minute for 10 minutes
Minute 1: 10 Burpees
Minute 2: 12 Kettlebell Swings
For Time vs AMRAP vs EMOM
The three formats fix a different thing and score a different thing, which is why each one needs a different clock.
| Format | What is fixed | What you score | How the clock runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| For Time | The work | Your time | Counts up; you stop it on the last rep, or the time cap stops it |
| AMRAP | The time | Rounds and reps | Counts down; you tap +1 Round after each round |
| EMOM | The work in each minute | Whether you held the pace | Restarts every minute; what is left of the minute is your rest |
A time cap turns a For Time workout into a hybrid: finish under the cap and your score is your time; hit the cap and your score becomes the work you completed. That is why the For Time mode above counts up but still ends on its own, and why the round counter is there in both For Time and AMRAP. The dedicated AMRAP timer and EMOM timer go further into pacing each format.
Popular CrossFit Timer Workouts
The same timer covers every classic CrossFit format — here is how each one works.
AMRAP Timer
AMRAP means as many rounds as possible. You set a single time cap — 8, 12 or 20 minutes — and repeat the same sequence of movements until the buzzer, then record your score. Tap +1 Round on the timer above after each round so the count is waiting for you at the buzzer, or use the dedicated AMRAP timer.
EMOM Timer
EMOM stands for Every Minute On the Minute. Each minute you complete a set number of reps, and whatever time is left is your rest before the next minute begins. Set the work interval to one minute and the rounds to the length of the piece, or open the EMOM timer.
For Time Timer
For Time workouts are scored by how long the work takes. Choose For Time above and set the time cap: the clock counts up from zero, you tap Finish on your last rep and your time stays on the screen. If the cap arrives first, the timer stops there and your rounds are still on the counter.
Tabata Timer
Tabata is 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest for 8 rounds — four minutes on one movement, and a common finisher in CrossFit classes. The Tabata timer comes preloaded with that protocol.
Interval Timer
Intervals give you full control over the work-to-rest ratio: 40/20, 30/30 or 60/60 repeated for as many rounds as you need. It is the format to pick for rowing, assault bike or running conditioning. See the interval timer for more presets.
Rest Timer
Between heavy sets or between stations, a fixed rest period keeps the session honest. Set the rest value and let the timer tell you when to pick the bar back up — the circuit timer does the same across a full list of exercises.
CrossFit Timer FAQ
The ratios behind EMOM, AMRAP and interval work are explained in our guide to work-to-rest ratios.
What is a CrossFit timer?
A CrossFit timer is a workout timer built around the formats used in CrossFit classes — AMRAP, EMOM, For Time, Tabata and interval work. It counts down your work and rest periods and signals every transition so you can follow the WOD without watching a clock.
What timer should I use for a CrossFit WOD?
It depends on the format. Use a count-up clock with a time cap for a For Time piece, a single countdown for an AMRAP, one-minute rounds for an EMOM, and work/rest intervals for conditioning. The timer above covers all of them — just pick the matching format.
Can I use this timer for AMRAP workouts?
Yes. Select AMRAP, set your time cap and press start. The timer counts down while you complete as many rounds and reps as possible, a +1 Round button keeps your round count, and an audio alert tells you when time is up.
Can I use this timer for EMOM workouts?
Yes. Select EMOM to get one-minute rounds, then set how many minutes the piece lasts. A sound marks the top of every minute so you know when to start the next set.
Can I create custom CrossFit intervals?
Yes. Set your own work time, rest time and number of rounds with the steppers. Any work-to-rest ratio is possible, from 10 seconds to a full hour of work.
Is this CrossFit timer free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no account, no download and no locked features. Open the page and start your WOD.
