Most sports are trained the same way: a period of effort, a period of recovery, repeated. That pattern fits martial arts, boxing and other combat sports, where training is already built around rounds, as much as it fits running, conditioning work and physical preparation, where the interval is the session itself.
The round is the unit in MMA, kickboxing and Muay Thai, where you work the bag or the pads until the bell. It is the unit for wrestling live goes, BJJ rolling and judo randori, where the round decides how long you stay on the mat with the same partner. And it sets the pace of karate kihon and kumite and of taekwondo kicking drills and sparring.
It works just as well for team sports and individual sports. Give a possession drill ninety seconds, give the group thirty seconds to rotate, and run it eight times. Set a two-minute block for skill practice — serves, shots, passes, technique repetitions — so the whole group changes station on the same signal instead of on someone's judgement. The same sports workout timer covers all of it.
The timer does not know which sport you practise, and it does not need to. You decide what happens during the work period; it decides when that period ends. If your sport has an established format, the specialised timers above come preloaded with it.

Why Use an Online Sports Timer?
Team and individual sports outside the combat disciplines rarely have an official round length the way boxing or judo does — a possession drill, a shooting rotation or a repeat-sprint set only has the length a coach or the athlete decides to give it. This timer exists for that gap: it does not assume a sport, it just holds whatever work, rest and round count you set for the drill in front of you.
That matters most for rotations. Give a group thirty seconds on a station and thirty to switch, and everyone moves on the same signal instead of on a coach's count — useful for anything run in stations or pairs: skill practice, shooting drills, position rotations, small-sided games on a clock. Set it once for a session and it repeats itself for as many stations or partners as the practice needs.
It also protects the part a wall clock cannot: counting in your head while sprinting or mid-drill is unreliable exactly when it matters. The countdown runs on its own and marks each transition with a sound, so attention stays on the field, the ball or the partner instead of the clock.
If your sport does have a fixed round length — boxing, judo, wrestling and the rest of the combat disciplines — the round lengths guide has the actual numbers, and the timers linked below come preloaded with them.
Sports Timer FAQ
Which ratio suits drills, conditioning and repeat-sprint work is explained in our guide to work-to-rest ratios.
What is a sports timer?
A sports timer is for team and individual sport practice that has no official round length — drills, rotations and repeat efforts where the coach or athlete sets the timing, rather than a rulebook. It counts down each work and rest period and signals every change.
How do I use a sports timer for training?
Set the length of a drill or effort, the rest or rotation time between them, and the number of repeats, then press start. Useful for anything run in stations, pairs or rotations, where everyone needs to move on the same signal.
Can I use this sports timer for different sports?
Yes. It is not tied to a single sport — drills, rotations and repeat-effort work look the same whether the sport is football, basketball, athletics or swimming. If your sport is a combat discipline with an official round length instead, use the dedicated timer for it below.
Can I set work and rest intervals?
Yes. Work and rest are both fully adjustable, along with the number of rounds and an optional preparation time before the first round starts.
Is the sports timer free?
Yes. The sports timer is free to use, runs directly in your browser and requires no account, download or app.
