Wrestling Training Timer

Wrestling Timer is a free online training timer designed for wrestlers, coaches and combat athletes. Use it to structure wrestling practice, conditioning sessions, drills, live rounds and rest periods.

Set your round length, rest time and number of rounds, then start the timer. No app or download is required.

Wrestling is the sport where time discipline matters most, because almost nothing in a practice is scored and almost everything is timed. A live round that runs forty seconds long is a different round from the one the coach called, and a rest period that stretches from thirty seconds to a minute quietly turns a conditioning session into a technique session. The timer holds both ends of that: it signals the start of the round, it signals the end, and it opens the next one on schedule with nobody standing over a stopwatch on the edge of the mat.

Wrestling Round Formats

Four formats that cover most of a practice. Load one into the timer and start the round.

Format Round Rest Rounds Load

Live wrestling 3 min 1 min 5
Drilling rounds 2 min 1 min 5
Conditioning intervals 30 sec 30 sec 10
Overtime simulation 1 min 30 sec 6

Wrestling Training Rounds

Wrestling training often involves repeated periods of intense work followed by short recovery periods. A timer makes it easier to keep every round consistent and allows wrestlers and coaches to focus on technique, intensity and conditioning instead of watching the clock.

Live Rounds

Live wrestling is the part of practice that most resembles competing, so it is worth running on the match format you actually wrestle. Set the round to the length of a period, keep the rest short, and let the timer close the round rather than the wrestlers — the pair on the mat is the worst judge of when a hard round should stop.

Drilling

Drilling rounds work best slightly shorter than live rounds, with enough rest to switch partners and reset the position. Two minutes on, one minute off gives both wrestlers a full turn on a technique without the quality dropping, and the alert tells the room to switch without the coach shouting over it.

Conditioning

Sprawls, shots, mat returns and stance-and-motion work all fit a short work interval with equal rest. Thirty seconds on and thirty seconds off, repeated ten times, is a five-minute block that stays honest because the interval does not care how the room feels.

Cutting the Rest, Not the Work

The simplest way to progress a wrestling session over a season is to leave the round length alone and shorten the rest. The work stays the same, the recovery gets harder to come by, and the change is measurable because both numbers were fixed to begin with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Freestyle, Greco-Roman and folkstyle period lengths are compared in our guide to round lengths in combat sports.

What is a wrestling timer?

A wrestling timer is an interval timer designed to structure wrestling rounds, drills, training sessions and rest periods.

How long should a wrestling round be?

Wrestling training rounds can vary depending on the goal, experience level and training format. Use a custom duration to match your practice.

Can I use this timer for wrestling drills?

Yes. You can use the timer for takedown drills, conditioning, partner exercises and other timed wrestling practices.

Can I customize the wrestling round timer?

Yes. You can customize the round duration, rest period and number of rounds.

Can a coach run a whole practice on one timer?

Yes. Put the timer in fullscreen on a laptop or tablet at the edge of the mat and the whole room works to the same signal. Load a new format between blocks — drilling, live, conditioning — using the presets above, and the round counter tells everyone how much of the block is left.

How do I make a wrestling session harder over a season?

Shorten the rest before you lengthen the round. Keeping the work interval fixed and cutting the recovery raises the difficulty in a way you can measure, because only one number changed. Adding rounds is the next step, and lengthening the round the last.

Does the wrestling timer work without an internet connection?

The page has to load once, but the timer itself runs entirely in your browser. Once it is open it keeps counting on a phone or tablet in a gym with poor reception, and the screen is kept awake while a session is running.

Is the wrestling timer free?

Yes. The Wrestling Timer on WorkoutTimerOnline is free to use online.
